There is a nice guide over at PIKVM – When I set mine up, I used version 2 of the guide as this was the latest version at the time.

DIY PiKVM V2 – PiKVM Handbook

There are now newer versions of the guide with new hardware and features.

Everything for this project is opensource as far as the software, and it will only cost you the price of the hardware needed and your time.

PiKVM / Download – Open and inexpensive DIY IP-KVM on Raspberry Pi

PIKVM - Great for new builds, and maintanance with out having extra monitors, room, or mouse and keyboard. Can use local or remote.

System –Display and HID control, allows me to managed quality and performance of the stream.

Test Tab – is like having a clipboard you can move text to your remote system.

ATX tab – You can connect to the GPIO of the PI – to manage power controls when connected to the pins on the motherboard for COMPLETE control

Shortcuts –
All your windows shortcuts you will need at a minimum.
Drive –
Nice to use, instead of a usb boot drive, as you can mimic CD or USB to boot from the ISO you want to use and change on the fly if you want to use it like a CD Drive.
Macro –
Make macros or uploads scripts.
